What Fashion Designers Do
22/06/2014 22:18
Yaara Levy

Fashion designers create original clothing, accessories, and footwear. They sketch designs, select fabrics and patterns, and give instructions on how to make the products they designed.

Fashion designers work in wholesale or manufacturing establishments, apparel companies, retailers, theater or dance companies, and design firms. Most fashion designers work in New York and California.

Most fashion designers have a bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as fashion design or fashion merchandising. Employers usually seek applicants with creativity, as well as a good technical understanding of the production process for clothing, accessories, or footwear.

The median annual wage for fashion designers was $62,860 in May 2012.

Employment of fashion designers is projected to decline 3 percent from 2012 to 2022. Declining employment in the apparel manufacturing industry is preventing overall employment of fashion designers from increasing.

What Bus Drivers Do
22/06/2014 22:27
Yaara Levy

Bus drivers transport people between various places—including work, school, and shopping malls—and across state or national borders. Some drive regular routes, and others transport passengers on chartered trips or sightseeing tours.

Bus drivers, especially transit and intercity bus drivers, had a higher rate of work-related injuries and illnesses in 2012 than the national average. Most injuries to bus drivers were due to highway accidents.

Bus drivers must have a commercial driver’s license (CDL) and complete a training program. In addition, they often need a high school diploma.

The median annual wage for transit and intercity bus drivers, which includes charter bus drivers, was $36,600 in May 2012. The median annual wage of school or special client bus drivers was $28,080 in May 2012.

Employment of bus drivers is projected to grow 9 percent from 2012 to 2022, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Job opportunities for bus drivers should be favorable, especially for school bus drivers, as many drivers are expected to leave the occupation.

Yaara Levy

Athletes and sports competitors participate in organized, officiated sporting events to entertain spectators.

Athletes and sports competitors often work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. They usually work more than 40 hours a week for several months during their particular sports season. They may be exposed to all weather conditions.

Athletes and sports competitors typically have at least a high school diploma or equivalent. They must have superior athletic talent and immense knowledge of their sport, which they usually get through years of experience at lower levels of competition.

The median annual wage for athletes and sports competitors was $40,060 in May 2012.

Employment of athletes and sports competitors is projected to grow 7 percent from 2012 to 2022, slower than the average for all occupations. Competition for most professional athlete jobs will remain very strong.

Yaara Levy

Librarians help people find information and conduct research for personal and professional use. Their job duties may change based on the type of library they work in, such as public, school, and medical libraries.

Librarians work for local government, colleges and universities, companies and elementary and secondary schools. Most work full time, but opportunities for part-time work exist.

Most librarians need a master’s degree in library science. Some positions have additional requirements, such as a teaching certificate or a degree in another field.

The median annual wage for librarians was $55,370 in May 2012.

Employment of librarians is projected to grow 7 percent from 2012 to 2022, slower than the average for all occupations. Librarians are needed to assist library patrons in locating information and resources, but growth will be limited as people become more comfortable using electronic resources to conduct their own research.

What Postal Service Workers Do
22/06/2014 22:25
Yaara Levy

Postal Service workers sell postal products and collect, sort, and deliver mail.

Postal Service clerks and mail sorters, processors, and processing machine operators work indoors, typically in a post office. Mail carriers mostly work outdoors, delivering mail.

Although there is no specific postsecondary education requirement to become a Postal Service worker, all applicants for these jobs must take a written exam.

The median annual wage for Postal Service workers was $53,100 in May 2012.

Overall employment of Postal Service workers is projected to decline 28 percent from 2012 to 2022. Automated sorting systems, cluster mailboxes, and tight budgets will adversely affect employment. Although the need to replace workers who retire will result in some job openings, very strong competition can be expected as the number of applicants typically exceeds the number of available positions.

What Police, Fire, and Ambulance Dispatchers D
22/06/2014 22:24
Yaara Levy

Police, fire, and ambulance dispatchers, also called 9-1-1 operators or public safety telecommunicators, answer emergency and nonemergency calls.

Police, fire, and ambulance dispatchers work in emergency communication centers. Dispatchers must be available around the clock, so they often have to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. Overtime and long shifts—sometimes 12 hours—are common. The pressure to respond quickly and calmly in alarming situations can be stressful.

Most police, fire, and ambulance dispatchers have a high school diploma. Many states require dispatchers to become certified.

The median annual wage for police, fire, and ambulance dispatchers was $36,300 in May 2012.

Employment of police, fire, and ambulance dispatchers is projected to grow 8 percent from 2012 to 2022, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Although the prevalence of cellular phones has increased the number of calls that dispatchers receive, consolidation of call centers has increased responding efficiency. Job prospects should be good as the stressful nature of the job results in many workers leaving this occupation.

Yaara Levy

Travel agents sell transportation, lodging, and admission to entertainment activities to individuals and groups planning trips. They offer advice on destinations, plan trip itineraries, and make travel arrangements for clients.

Travel agents work in offices, where they spend much of their time on the phone and on the computer. Most travel agents work for travel agencies, although about 12 percent were self-employed in 2012.

A high school diploma typically is required for someone to become a travel agent. However, many employers prefer additional formal training as well. Good communication and computer skills are essential.

The median annual wage for travel agents was $34,600 in May 2012.

Employment of travel agents is projected to decline 12 percent from 2012 to 2022. Job prospects should be best for travel agents who specialize in specific destinations or particular types of travelers, such as groups with a special interest or corporate travelers.
