A little insight on the letter to Galtia

Daniel
Gentiles Galtians Law Torah Jews
Recently I was talking with some dear friends about this passage in Galatians which was still confusing me and they gave me a little extra insight that I found to be very helpful, so now I'm sharing it. This is the main section I was focusing on:               t

Galatians 2:11-14
But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. For before certain men came from James, he was eating with the Gentiles; but when they came he drew back and separated himself, fearing the circumcision party. And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him, so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy. But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, “If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you force the Gentiles to live like Jews?”           t

So I was first having the hardest time figuring out what exactly was going on, and my friends said I should read it again keeping in mind that it is all about fearing God vs fearing man; and the the rest of Galatians seems to support reading it through this lens.           t

Now let's read it again with that in mind:                           t
Galatians 2:11-21
But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned.  For before certain men came from James, he was eating with the Gentiles; but when they came he drew back and separated himself, fearing the circumcision party.  And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him, so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy.  But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, “If you, though a Jew [someone who fears God], live like a Gentile [or are living like a gentile by now fearing man instead of God by separating yourself] and not like a Jew [who fears only God], how can you force the Gentiles to live like Jews?” [Or in other words "how can you teach men who previously feared men to now only fear God when your example right now is as one who fears man?"]     t

We ourselves are Jews by birth [taught from birth to fear God] and not Gentile sinners [man fearers];  yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the Torah but through faith in Jesus Christ [it is very easy to become self-righteous and proud in keeping the Torah], so we also have believed in Christ Jesus [and we fear Him], in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the Torah, because by works of the Torah no one will be justified.        t

But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we too were found to be sinners [we claim to be a new creation yet continue to live as one who fears only man], is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not!  For if I rebuild what I tore down, I prove myself to be a transgressor.  For through the Torah [in a way prescribed by the Torah] I died to the Torah [I can no longer stand condemned], so that I might live to God [as a new creation].  I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in [and fear of] the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.  I do not nullify the grace of God [by continuing to sin by fearing man], for if justification were through the Torah, then Christ died for no purpose.                            t

I think this is how this letter to the Galatians should be read.                     t

Daniel

Daniel
wheat parable tares
He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field,  but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away.  So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also.  And the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have weeds?’  He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ So the servants said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’  But he said, ‘No, lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them.  Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.’”             t
